Different Information in different places?

I have the VP operators manual for the AQ231A it says to use 10W30, ok I have been doing so. I just downloaded and printed off the VP Engine unit workshop manual AQ211, AQ231, AQ271, AQ311. In there it says to use: "SAE 20W50 (15W50)". I've also read contradicting max WOT range for my engine some documents say 4000-4400 rpm others say 4200-4600. All official VP publications. Maybe I'm just being picky... but which numbers do I follow...

Re: Different Information in different places?

A quick check of the shop manual says 42-4600 WOT. The 231 seems left out of the operators manual...Volvo Penta site says max engine speed is 4600.

Oil is common sense, imo. If you live in the tropics, run 20-50 if you want. If you live in a colder climate, use something lighter. I don't think the motor really cares unless you're really hammering on it for long periods of time, or operating in extreme climates. You don't list your location.

Nothing wrong with being picky, those numbers should be consistent. Although manufacturers have been known to change their minds as time passes...

4200 to 4600 is in the owners manual as well, just not in the specs like everything else.
It's also in the service manual, and even the DP prop guide. So where did you find it saying 40-44?

The oil specs in the manuals are also over 20 years old. If you go over to the non boating tech topics and look at the last page, there are a bunch of old old threads there, and also on about every page in that forum.
Basically if you don't want to follow the manual, use anything you want. Because no matter what oil you use, some one at some time has said they use it and nothing else and they have no problems.

In the prop guide it shows under DP for the aq231 4200-4600 then in the same brochure under SP for the aq231 it shows 4000-4400. As the for oil I was just wondering... seems odd for the large viscosity difference between the two manuals.

It's just a prop guide and there seems to be a few on the SP page that are wrong, stick with the info found in the owners manual and service manual and you will be fine
