A newly acquired boat is slightly too heavy for the trailer. My thoughts are to move the existing axle back and add a new axle on the front. My concern is that if I match the existing axle the suspension would be too stiff and rated for 7000 lbs. - about twice of what I need.
If anyone has time to answer a question, is it a bad idea to have different sized springs on the front axle and the rear axle connected by a equalizer bar?
Currently I have a 28" 6 leaf spring, which I think, but don't know for sure, is that it's rated at 1750 lbs. The axle I am considering is 20" long with four leaves, (1000 lb rating).
It would seem to me, but of course, I have no idea what I am doing, is that the majority of the engine weight would ride on the rear axle, the lighter front end of the boat would ride on the front axle and 10% on the hitch.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
