I would love to take the carbs off my 1995 yamaha 200 V6 and clean them. I have the clymers manual and think I am capable, but I am having doubts about getting them back on and adjusting them. If I follow the clymers word for word will I have any problems? Do I need special tools for this job? It says something about finding the top deal center of the piston, does this apply to synching up the carbs? Is it really as easy as lining up a number on the flywheel and just tweaking things here and there?

Also, my engine runs great, is there even any need to clean the carbs? They haven't been touched EVER though so I am going with yes unless someone says otherwise...

If your engine is running fine, leave the carbs alone. As my pappy use to say, if'n it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Your daddy hit it on the nose Capt Ken. Not sure on following the Clymers word for word or even the Yamaha manuals for that matter. Service manuals of all types tend to have errors. Normally that should be the case even though you have the link and synch confused with the timing. To set the timing you do need a dial indicator to confirm the indicator is correct. Then yes it is simple to set the timing on a Yamaha. To rebuild the carbs, you do not need any special tools, but they don't need it until they show symptoms of a problem.

Wow-I thought for sure they would need to be cleaned, she was winterized correctly last year and always starts up fine every spring, so I guess next week when I fire her up and everything is working all I will do is replace the waterpump and go!

Thanks-just saved myself a couple hours of work!

You save your self a lot of work by winterizing properly. It is cheaper and easier than having to repair.

about the only routine maint ,other than fuel filters , I reccomend is replcing the fuel pumps every three years. if one fails it can wipe a crank rapidly.

NJ If this is same motor that hasnt been serviced in 11 yrs my suggestion to keep it not too costly do waterpump, poppet valve and grommett,ck thermostats, decarb with seafoam or something similar, NGK spark plugs,ck and change lower unit oil and water seperator and maybe add some ring free to gas tank, lube all grease fittings incl one @ shift shaft under carbs .
