Difficulty Of Swapping Lower Units?

My 1976 25hp Johnson has a blown lower unit but I have access to another engine similar year with a blown top end. Other than a manual, are there any special tools (ie. gear pullers or alignment tools) that i would need to perform this job? I also would like to replace the impeller and examine the new lower unit to make sure its ok. Am I biting off too much? I do have moderate mechanical skills on cars. Thanks for your opinion and website being available to ask such questions.<br /> Michael

Re: Difficulty Of Swapping Lower Units?

i have a 35 h.p johnson which i recently took lower unit off and took the lower unit right apart .all i needed was a set of snap ring plyers and of course some sockets and wrenches.do yourself a favour and pick up a repair manual..i just recieved mine in the mail today and man it would have saved me a whole bunch of headaches.i too have moderate mechanical skills and its kind of fun being able to fix stuff myself .saves paying 70 bucks an hour for the local marinas shop rate.
