Re: diffrence between motor cycle fuel mix and outboard ????

Most outboards are liquid cooled and require an oil that is NMMA TC-W3 rated. These oils will be formulated with a lower flash point than oils for air-cooled engines because they have cooler combustion temperatures than air cooled engines.

Using a TC-W3 oil in an air cooled engine can result in excessive carbonization and eventual ring sticking. Likewise, using an air-cooled oil in a liquid cooled engine can also cause deposits.

There may be some oils that claim they are both TC-W3 rated and can be used in air cool engines. But be careful, and make sure the oil is actually certified as a TC-W3 oil, and not just claimed by the manufacture of the oil to meet the TC-W3 spec.

Best thing is to use an oil type that the manufacturer specifically recommends for each engine. You can find that in the owner's manual. ;)

I wish I had known that before I destroyed a Poulan chain saw by using TC-W3.

That was a lesson I will never forget.

My owners manual for my Husky 359 plainly says "DO NOT USE TCW OIL" in this chain saw. Doesn't go into the why not, but above makes it pretty clear.
