I am looking at getting a nice one for around the $800 mark. Is there any camera people out there. What to look for and what you don,t need. Not looking at any particular brand but it does look like most in that price range has about 12-14 mp.

I miss my old 35 mill and would like to match the quality it gave me.

Nikon or Cannon will both serve your whims just fine. I have an older digital Cannon Rebal which still works like a champ and my son uses a Nikon. Multiple lenses, flash and all the goodies ;)

Geeeze.... I wish there was a good market for all of my Canon A-1, lenses and toys too....... I spent allot of money on that stuff!

The only significant drawback is if most of your shots are snapshots then pick up an additional pocket camera too.

They make adapters to mount your A1 lenses on the Rebel. You need an FD to EF adapter.

Nikon just came out with a d7000. If I were in the market right now, it is the one I would get. I shoot a D90 and love it and the 7000 will only be better.. The price may be a little high though.

Here is a site to check out on the D7000, He also has reviews on many other cameras.

Upper end Nikon are awesome....... I recently (last week) purchased another 14 MP pocket camera and the screen on the back blows away my present digital slr screen.

I do a lot of photography work for extra money, and I can tell you, megapixels is not the most important part of the equation, but now a days you can get a lot of pixels for little money, I still do all of my work with a Canon DSLR that is about 10 megapixels. be sure to look at all of the specifications of the camera before making a choice, such as S&N ratios, White balance control, etc. Also make sure you have the horsepower and software to take advantage of the abilities of the camera you choose, the camera is pretty much useless without the back up software and computer to take advantage of those features.

In addition to MTboatguy's comments I'd add the glass, a gazillion MP with a low quality lens is defeating the purpose.

I would say that it is about 20% camera, 20% lens, and 60% operator.

MP means very little unless you are printing a lot larger than most people ever do. Today's mid range DSLR's are all very nice machines. My biggest advice is to decide which brand you prefer, so you can stick with it over the years and reuse your lenses on future cameras. My lenses are worth much more than my camera. No light will get to the sensor without the lens.

Re: Digetal Cameras

Gotta agree about the lens being more important than the MP. Here are a couple suggestions:

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS and 18-55mm Lens - 10.1 Megapixel, 2.5" LCD, Black
With powerful features including a 10.1-megapixel CMOS Sensor, Canon's DIGIC III processor, fast shooting and more, it's a digital powerhouse.

Re: Digetal Cameras

We went shopping to day and got the Canon rebalSXi. I think I did well it was on sale for $425 and came with one lens (18-55mm) . We aslo looked at the Nokon d7000 was a nice camera for about $900 but was out of my league when it came to being user freandly. You guys are right the magapixals are not every thing. I was told that anything over 8mp is photo quality. The big mp cameras are more for blowing photos up. thanks again for you imput.

You will be very happy with it! Best of luck.

BTW I run my Canon with the battery pack which holds two of the Canon batteries..... well worth the investment.
