Since I'm rebuilding my motor, it would be a good starting point for having an hour meter. I found a digital tach/hour meter here: http://catalog.enmco.com/viewitems/...mctr=(not provided)&__utmv=-&__utmk=119157066

Thoughts? I'd also be able to confirm the old OMC tach's accuracy. Nice to have an hour meter that's triggered just when the engine runs - I remember ones that were connected to the ignition and back when OMC decided you needed the key "ON" for the PTT to operate, more than once I forgot to key-off...

Just two questions.
Will the 5 1/2 ft cable be long enough for you?
What the heck is a 1 cycle engine?

yes they work well, got a different brand, check the cable length, tiny tach can be ordered with custom length

I wasn't planning to cable it up to the dash, rather mount it in the motor well. Just have a passenger shout the reading for'ard. Once the dash tach proves accurate (or not), it'll mostly be used as an hour meter, or setting idle, or timing, or...
I was wondering about the options too - they offer it for 1 spark/rev (2-stroke) and 1 spark/2rev (4-stroke), and for 2 spark/rev (wtf?).

Some motors have what is called lost or wasted spark ignition. That means two plugs fire at the same time, one around TDC and the other around BDC. The BDC spark at minimum compression is the lost or wasted spark.

If you don't choose the right spark triggered tach, the RPMs will be doubled by the lost or wasted spark tach on a 1 spark/rev motor or cut in half using the 1 spark/rev tach on a wasted spark motor.

Brings to mind a wast spark system. It fires two cylinders off of the same coil. Ones on compression and the wast one is on exhaust. But on a four stroke it's still one spark per revolution. And I don't think it can be used on a two stroke because the exhaust and intake are happening at the same time.
