I’m buying a dinghy as a mode to get around in the channel and harbor without brining out the big boat.. my question is should i look into a 2 or 4 stroke OB? which would give me the best performance and which would be the best overall purchase?

Re: dinghy motor options

Go browse the outboard part of this forum. There's quite a few "2 stroke vs. 4 stroke" threads, about once a month a new one starts. Use the search function. I bought an 8 hp 2 stroke last year. It was significantly lighter than the 4 stroke, and it didn't require the special handling when transporting as I throw it in the truck and on my back deck quite often. What kind of dingy are you buying? Answer that and we can narrow it down some more......Good luck!

I would go with a 2-stroke..
They weigh less, and are cheeper. They also tend to have very few problems in the 2-15hp range(few moving parts).

Yah know, check out the "Program motors" here on iboats. They're an excellent bargain, and just about right for what I assume will be a small aluminum boat.

Just click "outboards" near the top of any page here.

Anything under 25 hp I would go 2 stroke. Weight is a major factor and sounds like your needs are simple.
