I have twin Johnson 225hp's (1990) on my boat. The problem I have is this:

I need to have BOTH keys in the ON position in order to have either engine run. As well, when turning off one engine (but turning the key to "OFF") both engines die.

The reason is this: When one key (we'll say the Port Ignition Key) is turned to the "OFF" position the Starboard Ignition Key is grounded through the kill switch. The kill switch from OMC (Part number 0174744) has two grounding leads. Simply put, one ignition key switch grounds the other by back feeding through the single kill switch.

Part number OMC 0174744 includes a DIODE. Mine isn't there anymore (unless it's internal to the kill switch (which has no terminals, only wires coming out of the back)

My question is this: Can I simply purchase a diode from Radio Shack and install it inline on one of the ground wires between the kill switch and one of the ignition switches (I'm assuming that would be the correct plan)

Do I need to install a single diode, or one in each wire (one between the kill switch and each ignition)

Most importantly, which DIRECTION would I need to install the diode?

MUCH thanks
