Such a silly thing, I know. 1985 Merc 260s. Port motor has dipstick on left side (when looking at the front of the engine), starboard engine has dipstick on the right side, and the actual stick is missing. I've been using the port motor dipstick to check, however it hits the bottom of the pan and does not give accurate readings. Also noticed the dipstick tube does not have the threaded end for sucking oil. This is fine as I have the hoses that replace the drain plugs in the pan. I really just need a part number for the dipstick this engine would actually use. Engine serial is: A437782. Attached is photo of dipstick location. The red thing is a plug I have over the hole, right where the riser meets the exhaust tube.

You can get a universal stick at it the local parts store. When you change the oil,put in the recommended amount of oil, adjust the stick to the full mark on the new stick.

Ayuh,.... It Appears, that somebody lost the Merc dipstick, 'n tube that goes into the oil pan, 'n used a standard Chevy dipstick, 'n tube, that fits into the hole in the block,....
