I bought a new marine dipstick and tube (one that goes to the bottom of the pan) for my 1996 Chev 5.7L. The problem I have is that the tube slides down into position at the flair but is not a press fit to the block like I have experienced with cars and trucks. So, it is loose and will slide right back out just as easily as it slides in. Is there a recommended way to "set" the tube so it won't come out? Liquid steel, spot weld, etc.????

Thanks...

Is this the original motor and oil pan?
What part number did you buy?
Have a serial number?

normally you have to drive them in the last 3/4 of an inch. the tube should be a bit larger in diameter right before the formed flange.

for that purpose, I have a set of vise grips I modified that clamp around the tube so I can hit the vice-grips with a hammer to drive them in.

Building the engine from scratch so no Mercruiser serial number. What I bought was TUBE ASSY Mercruiser 15296A2 which Mercruiser Parts says is compatible with a 1996 5.7L LX which is essentially what this engine will be.

Tube is correct but now is the pan same as Merc 809910 ?

Ayuh,...... Many times there's a little retainer clip around the tube, 'n bolted to the motor with a 1/4"-20 bolt,.....

That would allow yer loose fit to be sealed with sealant,.....

Well the oil pan isn't really involved.. The dipstick tube goes into the block so it is inside the pan already.. The Mercruiser assembly drawings show a clip up near the top of the head that holds the upper end of tube but doesn't show anything at the base near the block right above the oil pan.. Guess I will check a truck engine drawing and see if there is anything showing on a regular engine...
