dipstick tube question

I just bought a 18ft runabout with a 4.3 in it with the alpha 1 drive. I noticed the dipstick tube is connected by tee to my drain tube hooked to drain plug. I'm wondering how you can get a correct reading on the dipstick with it connected to the bottom of the pan. Thanks

Because the oil will be at the same level in the tube as the level of oil in the pan.

That's also the way Volvo's have been since at least 1995 and all OMC Cobras.
