Is there anything to the story I read on a site called "ripoff report" about import of non EPA approved new outboard motors, being directly sold to customers on ebay?

Sounds like vicious gossip to me. Probably complete fabrication by someone seeking to discredit imported outboards.

Can you be a little more specific, LOB? I just visited eBay, looking at non-traditional brands of outboard. I saw some of the Chinese ones listed there for sale, but don't know much about them.

The only new outboards I saw listed on eBay were Tohatsu/Nissans and the Chinese imports. To which are you referring?

Is this the report you're talking about, LOB?

http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/303/RipOff0303715.htm

That sounds a lot like the problems you are reporting with your Tohatsu outboards. Did you write that report? If so, why not just say so, and put a link in your post?

I'm confused by all of this. Are Tohatsu outboards somehow illegal to sell in the US? As far as I know, they are not.

Could you be more specific, please?

Is this link a one off or are there multiple complaints with the same themes ????

I couldn't find any other complaints, other than one from some guy in Alaska who took exception to his reported treatment from a dealer. Both were on that site, which I've never heard of before.

I don't know. There are lots of folks who seem quite happy with Tohatsu and Nissan outboards. Plenty of posts in various places expressing that.

Note the 25:1 oil ratio on the ebay motor. It's a weed-whacker with a prop on it.

Hi.

I came onto the allegations about the import and sale on ebay of non EPA approved motors while back tracking another reference at lunch time. I also looked at the ripoff report you mentioned, but I didn't put it there or write it.

There are also other links to EPA approval and import. It seems that people do import, and sell non approved equipment and parts, but I would have to go back and look, and you can do this as well as I can.

So, is there anything to the allegations about selling non EPA approved motors, and how would a business do this, and how would a person know what to watch out for?

Why was my post asking about the sale of non EPA motors so interesting?

Re: Direct sales of Non EPA approved motors.

It is interesting because you seem to have an organized campaign to discredit Tohatsu and their products, LOB.

Some of us, over the years, have gotten used to member complaints about a product, service or organization that give exaggerated versions of only one side of the story and usually leave out parts of the truth that might discredit their complaints.

The entity under attack usually declines to put the whole story in the public domain if it even knows about the attack.

So, we challenge stories like this and your other threads as well as putting an outright ban on bashing.

No, JB I don't have an organized campaign to discredit Tohatsu and their products. On the contrary, I have been disappointed by the application of their TLDI technology because I wanted to use it, and regret that they are not moving ahead with it into the mid and heavy hp market.

I realize you all challange my threads, and that Tohatsu interests are important. However, the TLDI, and similar technology is now over 10 years old. It shouldn't cause stress when someone challanges the application of any technology, this is how products are changed and improved.

I agree that not allowing bashing is the correct way to operate an open forum, and applied impartially is the test of whether a forum is open, or a business.

I may not be able to access this forum for a few days. So, if I disappear it is because I got locked out while I was away.

Cheers.

Re: Direct sales of Non EPA approved motors.

We have no interest in protecting Tohatsu, or any other maker for that matter, other than trying to protect any organization and our membership from half truths and distortions.

No legal court in the world would pass judgement after hearing only from a plaintiff. If the victim of a complaint fails, for reasons of their own, to present a case for the respondent the least we can do is cross examine the plaintiff.

We are partial to truth. . .in its entirety. Your plea above does not ring true to those who have followed your numerous attacks on Tohatsu and their products, particularly the 90TLDI.

Re: Direct sales of Non EPA approved motors.

There is a motor out there called Tonda (I think) they do have a web site and is of Chinese decent and looks about 90% Honda from the outside. I visited the web site, but definately nothing there about EPA that can remember. Lots of knock-offs out there. The problem being, once you save a couple hundred dollars, where do you go for parts if something is not standard equiptment. Ever try to find parts for a YUGO, which was marketed in the USA a few years ago.
