I have a 1992 merc. 2-stoke, oil injected, outboard on a maxum 1800xr. Freshwater use. Boating is new to me. Should the motor remain spotles inside the cover once clean, or is it expected to have some leaks/residue. The bottom of the powerhead is usually oiley. How often should it have to be cleaned. Or do I have serious problems if it is always oiley?

I believe its natural for a 2 stroke to have a little build up. Not too much, but some. On my 2005 mercury 150, i just had the cover off and below the powerhead and under the carbs there was a little mix of oil, dirt, ect. Not much by a long shot, but enough so the rag had some black on it. from the bottom carb and bottom cylinders all the way up to the flywheel, there was not one spec of carbon, dirt, oil ect. It was so clean you could eat off of it (literally) even on the carbs.

If there is a small amount of this residue on or around your motor your ok, but if your leaking gas and/or oil and there is a lot of it, you might want to check your fuel and oil lines to make sure they are properly connected and in tact. There shouldnt be any leaks, but its ok to have some residue. Cleaning it is all up to you. Its not bad to have it perfectly spotless or to have some residue. Its all up to you.
