dirty toons = lost RPM?

my 22ft suntracker has been the the water for the past few years and i don't think the previous owner ever cleaned the toons. i can only push about 4200rpm on my 3.0L I/O with 2 adults, 3 kids and medium dog aboard for ~19mph.

i initially thought it was water in my toons slowing me down since it sits lower to port, but the mechanic that has my boat told me there was no water in the toons. He suggests acid washing the toons to regain the speed/rpm at WOT.

he is doing lots of other work so i'm not sure i can/want to spend the extra $250 he is going to charge to clean the toons.

can i have lost 600-800rpm from dirty toons or is he just trying to sell me a service i don't need.

i'm leaning toward doing it anyway, since if i have to re-prop to regain my rpm, i want to start with a "clean slate" so to speak. thanks.

Without seeing the logs it is hard to say for sure but the short answer is yes. Dirty logs will have an effect on speed and RPM. If your toon lists to one side however something is not right. The only time I have seen this and there was no water in the log it was on a toon that had a 30gal tank on the rear Port but it was barely noticeable.

i've got the 30gal cube tank on the rear port. it's hard to tell unless you look hard. only reason i noticed is that it seems to pull some to the port when underway. i've also been searching for a reason why i don't get max recommended rpm at WOT.

There is a little tab on the lower that can be adjusted to adjust for the pulling to one side. As far as your RPMs it is hard to answer until you test it with clean logs.

If the engine reved normally before, one of two things has happened. Either the tubes are dirty (really dirty) or the engine isn't making full power. A throttle that's not opening fully, lack of a tune up, water in fuel, bad fuel, and the engine simply getting tired are all things to look at. But if the engine ran fine before, changing the prop is not the solution.

As said, if the outfit performed better previously and has gradually got worse you could be getting slowed down with very dirty logs. If it suddenly started giving poor performance then lean toward the motor having issues. Either way clean toon's are important for max performance.

clean the toons yourself.. its about 20 buck for a gallon of acid it will take no more then a gallon to clean it all..
just spay it on and hose it off .
cleaned my toons and took me about 2 hrs:D
