Hate to say it, but your problem goes beyond what a router can fix...

Gonna have to have a sit-down with 'em.

Neither one of you's gonna like it, but it's the only way to help them. Even if you block her PC at hom, it dosent mean she can't go somewhere else and log-on.

If you want to go totally CIA on her, install remote desktop or a keycatcher application and track down the bozos she's talking to on these chat rooms and stick you foot up their arse.

Dr. spots

Duplicat post. I also posted this reply on the duplicat post on "Non-Boating Technical Topics"..

Take a look at a program called "Net Nanny". It comes with a list of known sites that children (of any age) should not be visiting. You can add sites to their existing list (easily done). It also comes with a list of words that are flags when they try to do a search on the internet which will block any sites that may be related to those words, especially sexually explicit words.

Sometimes it is over restrictive and blocks their search for legitimate homework topics and can cause some frustration. But when you download the program you will input a password that lets you bypass the blocks. So they may have to call you to unblock a net site they need for homework (just don't let them see the password you input).

My kids are 15 and 13 and I downloaded the program to keep them from accidently logging on to net sites with sexual or violent content.

It came with a free trial period then I bought it. Works for me.

Why don't you just download the lyrics of the most popular rap "artist's" best selling crapola? That oughta provide a pretty comprehensive list of less-than-polite words.

I remember doing a search for Katrina in the "photos" tab in Google and a bunch of porn came up.

I dont care what kind of system you put in place, the porn will get through.

But the chat rooms is where they can get into trouble. Ban every chat room.

How bout putting the computer right next to the TV so you will be able to watch them as you watch TV. Make it a rule they can only be on when you are watching. Put a password on the computer so they cant get on unless you type it in.

Ken

Re: Dirty Words,..???....

A friend of mine graduated high school about 6 years ago. his senior year they added a net nanny type program to their computers. To figure all of the naughty words to block, they gave my friend and one other problem child extra credit to sit at the computer typing lists of all of the dirty words or phrases they could think of.

Of course it only took the students a few days to learn how to bypass the security features and find porn.

Look into setting up a home network so you can check their files from your own computer. You could also run the internet connection through this network and be able to shut down their connection at will.
In my computer investigations I have a program that when run on a computer will show all images that have been on the hard drive, even deleted items. It can also show all websites visited after they have been deleted. This is important because it does not mess with the time and date stamp of when the image was last accessed.

My sister had to check her kids computer every day. If they deleted anything without her checking it she took away their personal computer and made them use the family one in the living room for a week. They had to work online with their doors open, and could not use the computer when mom and dad were gone. Made my neice mad but was very effective.

One solution is to keep the computer in the family room where all can see what is going on. I don't believe in "Kids Rights" to privacy.

You're trying to have the computer babysit for you. You're not going to solve the real problem this way.

Check into getting a "keystroke logger".
It is a program that records every keystroke they type, instant messages, chat, websites, email, passwords and all.
You can then read the trail.

Something like this:
http://www.awarenesstech.com/general/index-12g4.html

Lots of companies are offering this software, some is even shareware.

More info:

http://www.pestpatrol.com/Support/About/About_KeyLoggers.asp

Google "keystroke logger" for more.

Re: Dirty Words,..???....

I had a similar problem with my daughter. I installed a key logger that let me see what she was typing but I couldn't see what she was viewing. I found software that would take snapshots of the screen. This allowed me to see what she was seeing and to read instance messages she was receiving. I left the key logger installed. I would able to view her logon ids and with the key logger I knew the passwords. All the email addresses where Yahoo. You can open and read Yahoo mail and then 'mark' the email that has been read as unread / unopened. When the email is opened again you cannot tell that it has been opened.

This software works great and worth the cost.Spector Software

What you don't know can hurt your kids and what you do know can save your kids.
