Hello to all,

As only a few know I purchased a 1986 19' Bayliner Capri Bow rider (first boat ever) about a month ago. I took it to the shop and had some work done on the boat to make sure that it was in working order. The work I had done is impeller kit, carburator cleaned, had it gone through to make sure it ran, etc...After getting it back I put some Sea Foam fuel stabilizer in the tank cause I knew that it was going to be some time before I could put it in the water. I finally after much anticipation took the boat out on Sunday, well tried to anyway. Then disaster struck. I couldn't get it to start at all. I turned on the blower and let it run for 4 minutes or so, and then before I choked it I turned on the bilge pump, after that I tried to start it and nothing. It would start up but when I put it back in neutral it cut off. I tried multiple times to get it started. I finally got it to running and as I was backing out it shut off again this time away from the dock. So thankfully I had long docking rope. I smelt a strong concentration of fumes coming from the engine area. Could it be possible that I flooded the engine? Could I please get some incite from all you certified boating experts. I'm so fed up that I'm ready to sell the thing.

Because I don't want to go back to the marina and get stared at and yelled at again.

get the water muffs that hook up to the garden hose and get it running in your driveway first. Make sure you are familiar with all the quirks it takes to start it. let it run for a while, i let mine idle for about 10 min or so usually. IF no one is around, you can even put it in gear and out again and see how it acts.

For example, my boat has a 305 w/ a 4 barrel carb on it. Its a cold blooded SOB, but i know that. so i know to start it at home the day before i take it out, and then when i take it out, before its off the trailer, make sure its running smoothly before i back off the trailer. You dont wanna be jumpstarting or trying to get it to run and launch at the same time. what engine and outdrive do u have?

my boat takes ALOT of fuel to start it, so i do smell fumes while trying, but thats why the blower is on...so the fumes are exiting the engine bay. I have to give it about 6 or 8 full throttle pumps out of gear before i even crank it over, then a few more while its cranking. Actually come to think of it, I take the engine cover off completely most of the time when i start it just in case i need to dive in there real quick for anything.

First off you need to remember that SeaFoam is an excellent cleaning product. If there was the slightest amount of gunk in your tank or fuel line it will definitely get rid of it. However, if you don't have a decent fuel filter then all of that displaced junk will end right back up in the your carbs.
Even though they were cleaned, as long as you're running the cleaner through it there a good possibility that you might go through two or even three filters before it's all cleared up.
So, go back to square one and re clean your carbs and anything else that the SeaFoam runs through. Once you get all of that done then you shouldn't have any other issues. Keep us informed on your progress and what you ended up doing.
