disconnect the shift shaft from the LU

ive got a 1973 johnson 115. i cant figure out how to disconnect the shift shaft from the LU. i just dont see the retaining screw is. can anyone help me out here. ive got to replace the impeller.

I wish I had more to tell you, but I've never worked on a '73 115hp motor.
Here's a parts diagram, which lists part #76 as the shift rod connector. It appears to me (and this is just a guess--which isn't good, I know) that perhaps taking the lower unit bolts out would allow you to drop the lower unit about an inch, which may allow you to get to that connector and disconnect the shift rod. Other than that, I can be of no help at all.

I had the same problem with my 76 200hp. The shift rod is one piece all the way up to the linkage inside the engine compartment. I had to undo all the shifter linkage and unscrew the top piece of the shaft. it was real hard to get in there and im still not sure that its the best way to do it.

thats exactly the way this one is as well. i do dread doing it but at least now i know that that is more than likely the way i will have to do it as well.
