1977 85 HP Evinrude V-4. Trying to drop lower drive. Cannot disconnect the shift rod. I see where the rod connects to a bellcrank, just can't see a pin or screw to remove it. As per similar problem I read about in this forum I removed the lower carb, but can only see a flush ground pin connecting the bell crank to the rod. Also was wondering if the shift rod is keeping the drive from dropping down after removing the bolts connecting the lower drive to the exhaust housing. It drops about 1/4". Am I just being to timid about dropping the unit down or is the shif rod holding me up. The Clayton Manual I am using leaves much to be desired on this particular procedure. Thanks

Re: Disconnecting Shift rod

There are good diagrams on ishopmarine. My 83 50hp has a 3/8 bolt that I remove. It is easier if you take the starter off.

Re: Disconnecting Shift rod

PW...your setup is a little different than firemans.

Welcome to iboats!

From the starboard (drivers) side of the engine, look for the two flat rods going back to the shift rod. These have to be separated to release the shift rod. There is a large shoulder bolt holding them together which screws into the block. Back this bolt out nearly all the way. This should afford enough slack to get the rods apart and release the shift rod.

Here's the BRP site link also if you want to check the parts breakdown. Click on engine diagrams and follow the prompts. When you get to the list of breakdowns for your engine, click on "cylinder and crankcase". Gives you a real good pic of your engine.

http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/

Thaks OBJ for correcting him on my setup. Wasn't sure if it ws the same or not and I didn't go to the diagrams to check his out. The Bombardier site seems to be down a lot when I go to check things there. I don't mean to promote ishop with iboats selling so many parts but I can always seem to get to their diagrams.

Re: Disconnecting Shift rod

A lot of folks use the ishop site fireman. No problem. Seems to be a bit more user friendly..... :)
