disconnecting shifter 1995 40hp 2stroke YAMAHA

I need to replace impeller, I am not sure about disconnecting the shifter. Any help greatly appreciated 1995 40hp 2stroke yamaha

I think it depends on the model # of the motor.
Do you know what model you have?My C40TLRX just slips apart at the lower unit as it is a splined shaft
