disconnecting the speedometer tube

I have a Mercury OptiMax 225 and the speedometer isn't working. I have already drilled out what I can. So the next step I assume would be disconnecting the speedometer tube and blowing what trash is left back through.

Here is my issue. I can not figure out how it disconnects. I thought someone told me to push in on the metal tube that the rubber tubes go into, but that didn't disconnect them.

What am I missing?
