Any IT pros (or anyone else) that has experience properly and legally disposing of broken PC monitors?

We have quotes from $14 to $40 each to dispose.

Some have offered to pick up for free, but what is their incentive and we don't want the EPA finding them in a ditch somewhere? Is there enough gold to make recycling worthwhile? Certainly they are not after the lead.

any input welcome.

Check with you'r local university, it's possible they have a safe disposal method and will cheerfully do away with the offending monitor. They may even have a breakdown shop themselves and do it for free.
Ross

Check with your city or county sanitation department. Mine takes them for a $5 fee. But being out in the sticks as I am, they only take them 1 or 2 days a year.

Also some computer shops will take them for a small fee.

look into "electronics recycling" companies.
if you have a big enough qty., I can refer you
to someone who may take them for free also.
are they working?

Seems to me that Dell or IBM has a computer recycling program, but as I recall it costs money on your end. If anyone reading this lives in England please confirm or not that there is a nation wide recycling program for all electronics which starts out with a deposit when you buy the item, am I right, close or over the hill. ;)

Re: Dispose of old computer monitors.

A side note on an interesting topic...I work for the state (guess which one ;) ), and I used to see them back up box trucks full of used computers, monitors, printers etc. and toss them all into dumpsters that were about 6' by 6' by 20 feet long, until they were filled up. Then off to the landfill. Happily, that practice has stopped and they now auction it all off in huge lots to the highest bidder. The lots never fail to sell. Just what happens to them after that, who knows? At least the state stopped filling up the landfill with staggering numbers of them. :)

Put the whole lot up for sale on eBay with a $1 first bid - buyer to arrange shipping/pickup - you'll be surprised! I find I do very well with old computer gear. Lots of people and companies looking for parts when the stuff is at the end of it's lifecycle. I once sold a lot of OLD IBM dumb terminals that would have cost me money to dispose of. I was getting like $25 a piece on eBay for them!
