Not sure if this belongs here or DS but, I found some road flares in my garage that have to be 20 years old. Are these still too dangerous to just toss in the trash?

Find a local Boy Scout troop and donate them, they make great campfire starters. I would not throw them in the trash. I am sure it is not a matter of stability, like an old stick of dynamite, but I would not do it.

A number of years ago I bought a whole case of road flares for exactly that purpose. A Troop leader would use them responsibly.

We throw them in the fire pit on the 4th of July or break them in half and use them for fire starter as Boom said, don't throw them in the trash, they will still burn and quite hot if I have to say it.

I would just chop them up and use them as fertilizer ..That is basically all they are now anyway . A very good high nitrate fertilizer.

Do not chop them up as a fertilizer. They may contain perchlorates which will leach into the water table. It blocks the ability for the body to take in iodine and is not healthy.

Burn them in a fire pit, use as a fire starter or dispose of them broken up in the trash. The sulpher is not too bad but the perchorates will cause harm.

Just light them up at your next family picnic.
