Hello all,

New to the forums and boating and need some advice. Recently purchased a 1989 Larson senza 3.7 L Mercruiser engine and can't start. Boat was family owned and is definately a fixer upper First thought that came to mind was no spark! When turning the engine it just turns and nothing else. I proceeded to do a tune up. Figured I would also clean up the points at the same time. While in distributor I noticed bad wear on the cap and noticed the hinged weights don't move. What do you think would cause this? Should the hinged weights move freely or should thier be resistance?

Do a search in this forum for the infamous Merc 470....
After a few hours reading, you may want to change course...

Good Luck.....

Senza you are going to get pounded on that motor. Do you have what looks like an alternator on it?

I have twins of them and will not give up on them. Most important... Do not overheat them. Change the impeller to try to keep it cool. They are different metals. Cast iron and aluminum which doesnt like to play together. There is a 4 inch riser upgrade you need to do. If you keep them cool and get rid of the water cooled volt reg and the original charging system they can be little torque monsters. No one here likes them except the ones stuck with them. Like me.

Damn! Hope not too bad. I think it has an alternator. Is it a massive thing in front of the engine at least double the size of a regular alternator? I have replaced the voltage regulator already $$$$ and the impellor after it burnt up. how do you convert the charging system?
