I have a 1994 GM 305 motor that starting leaking drops of oil during the summer. I would see rainbows in the water on the pavement when I pulled the plug out after a days boating. This week I changed the oil becuase 100 hours is up and starting to look for the leak and found a small puddle to the left of the distributor. Looks to be oil around the distributor.

My question is it a matter of pulling out the distributor and replacing the gasket or should I be looking for something else? Looks to be Item 16 gasket listed on the following site: http://www.perfprotech.com/store/assembly/DISTRIBUTOR-AND-IGNITION-COMPONENTS,1014-110.aspx

I believe the procedure for pulling the distributor is to mark location of the distributor to the intake manifold loosen bolt and pull the distributor out.

pull the cap, mark the rotor to the dist and on down to the intake. mark the position of the rotor as it 'unwinds' from the cam gear.

there is also an oil port that can leak just to port of the dist.

I checked the oil port which I believe is the port where the Oil Pressure Sender is coming out of along with the Oil Pressure Alarm that I added last fall. The pool of oil is on the opposite side of the port on the port side of the distributor.

Thanks for the procedure for marking the distributor before taking it off.
