The engine is a 1975 merc 850 4 cyclinder with type III cd pointless distributor...which way should the rotor be pointed when the #1 cyclinder is at TDC ?.....the manual says that at TDC the arrow on the dist pulley should be pointed at the straight line on the flywheel but when it is at this setting the rotor is pointed across the cap to the #2 cyclinder tower...could it be that at some time in the past someone broke down the distributor and put the rotor shaft back incorrectly ? .....not famaliar with this ignition but am i wrong in thinking that the rotor should be pointed towards the #1 tower at TDC....which on this engine means that the distributor pully arrow is 180 degrees from where its supposed to be by the book !!!...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Re: distributor question

I've seen more than one Merc dist cap marked wrong.

But anyway,

If you feel that the wire location is amiss, it's pretty easy to swap them around at the plug end. They might actually screw into the cap at the dist end.

Re: distributor question

found the problem i think !....upon close inspection of distributor pulley i noticed the shear key had sheared off and the pully was 180 from where it should be ...took pulley off and repositioned with new key...see what happens today !
