I've seen them advertised, but no personal experience. Any way it's yours and looks like your stuck, or in luck with it. Let us know in a year or two how it holds up.

Best of luck ya'll

Re: Dixon ZTR Mower

My father bought A Dixon ZTR about 30-35 years ago. I "inherited" it and about 4 years ago had the Transmission replaced. Only major thing done to it. Last year the tranny was acting up again after about 20 minutes of running. Brother has a small yard, so he inherited it and I got a Cub Cadet Zero Turn. Bro is still using the Dixon.

They are a bit light weight, but the Briggs engine in mine was solid. Known for the Tranny to get weak. But if you have a small yard, or not much of an incline it will do you just fine.

Well, so far so good! Everything is working good except for the headlights which isn't a real big deal seeing as I hopefully wont be mowing at night!

The new dixons with the Hydrostatic Trannys are really good. Even the older ones the machines were built solid, they're major drawback was the rubber cone drive system. They tend to wear out after a few years, and are a PITA to replace. Trust me I used to repair them all the time.

If you have to rubber cone drive, and one side goes out, just have them both replaced at the same time. You'll be glad you did.

Bill,
I dont think mine has the rubber cones (if I knew exactly what you were talking about that would probably help!) Are the cones what touch the spinning 'clutch' under the seat to make the mower go forward or backward? If so, they are metal, if not, well I have no idea what you are talking about:D

Re: Dixon ZTR Mower

Mower is still working fine but.......
The left drive doesn't seem as strong as the right. To make a right '0' turn all I have to do is relax the right bar to neutral and slightly push the left forward, however to make a left '0' turn I have to pull the left bar back almost all the way and then slightly push the right one forward. Is this becasue of the 'cones' that touch the 'clutch' under the seat? Are they worn out or am I on the wrong trail??

Yea that sounds like the drive system is wearing out.

The cones are actually metal, the disk that runs along it is rubber. Its actually a neat system. The disc is adjusted up and down the cone by the drive levers. This is how you get variable speed out of each side, as well as revearse.

Some models were adjustable thru the use of cams and turn buckles. Also a old trick is to try to get some more grip through the disc by using a belt dressing on them.

Re: Dixon ZTR Mower

Bill,
Thanks for all your help....I finally know what the cones are:D I looked at a completely new drive system with cones clutch and all on ebay for $500. You think once mine goes out completely (that is after I try your belt dressing trick:D) it will be wise to go ahed and buy the drive system. I think it would as that and the motor is pretty much the most expensive parts of the motor, that is considering the pulleys dont lock up on the mower deck but I have greased them recently...
Also, today one of the drive sprockets broke so now I get to buy one of those little boogers:mad:
Again, thanks for your help
