Just picked up donor boat for my project boat (I was in need of 4.3 engine and Alpha One Outdrive)
The alternator was already stolen from the donor boat and they put an automotive starter on it so I know I need to replace these, but I also noticed there is no fuel/water seperator.
Are these stock from the factory (1988 Sea Sprite Donor Boat) or does it depend on manufacturer?

No - not all boats come with a fuel water separator.

Well that seems kinda stupid ....doesn't it?

Ayuh,.... It's Economics,.... Every boat on the water, Should have 1, but many don't...

From what I've seen these run around $30 to $40 and if a manufacturer is buying in volume they would probably get them for half that....I would think this amount would be trivial when compared to the cost of a new boat

Like Bond-O said, economics. When I bought my house the bathroom basin was a cheap (dare I say 'Chinese') plastic piece of crap. It was dull and difficult to keep clean. A couple of years later I decided to replace it with one of those swanky shiny porcelain ones. I went to my local hardware shop and on the shelf was a nice shiny basin for $55.... and sitting right alongside it was a replacement for my existing basin (the crappy plastic one) for $51... Someone had made a decision to save $4 and opt for the worse looking piece of rubbish available in a house that would have cost about $80,000 to build...

And you're wondering why a boat builder didn't spend $30-$40 in a boat that would have cost him about $5,000 to build....

Have a sense of perspective man!

:D :D :D :D

Chris.........
(Water sep filters have been standard on Mercruiser engines (actually bolted to the engine itself) for about 20 years now)....

just bought my boat in october (82 doral 164) and found out the hard way that it didnt come with a water seporator. And the bone heads at doral decided to locate the fuel vent so it would suck up water every time we hit a wave. My stuff always being projects, I installed one of the raycor filters that had a built in water seporator and things have been good since
