We often park at a rock bar to swing nearly every time we go out, and normal anchors take so much work to dig in, and often break loose. I was looking at something like this (link below), but question its holding power in sand and rocks.... how can a 4 inch spiral dig deep enough to hold a boat against waves and current in sand and rocks substrate?

anyone have any experience with something like this? The one below seems a little pricey at $100 but just using it as an example.

It might work in sand, but not so good in rock. I think current/strong wind would rip it loose. I wouldn't trust it myself, but then again,I've never been near one of that type.
Mabe someone who has used them will step up and let ya know what they think.

slide anchor is much better. More expensive, but better.

I can't see that working well in rock. Frankly I can't see it working well in sand on anything but a calm day, there's just not much there to hold. I fought crappy slip ring and mushroom anchors for over a year in windy KS, until I finally bought one of these.

Richter Anchor : Cabela's

Fantastic product and worth every penny, not a single issue with movement even on a windy day.

I've looked at those a few times but they were always labeled as river anchors so i shy'd away.... maybe i'll have to pick one up

I use augers like this on the river at the sand bar. They hold very well with all of the boat traffic wake we encounter while tied off.

When I anchor near shore I use a fluke anchor with an anchor bungee, drop the anchor, drive to shore and hook up the the bow line. Then let the boat go back out to deeper water to keep the hull off the bottom. When your ready to go pull the boat in, load up and retrieve the anchor.

Our lakes are usually either mud or rock bottom, or some combo of the two. The 18lb anchor always holds our 18' boat, worth every penny in my book

I have noticed that putting an anchor on my 25 foot boat that is rated for 31-35 foot boat has greatly increased my holding power. I will always oversize anchors from now on.

I have two. One is a navy style and one is a fluke. Either will hold you fine. I boat in the same bottom conditions you do and they have never failed me.

I made my own out of of couple of Aug tips and some PVC. They work great in sand but for anything else you need a good anchor and chain
