Do carbs have a second stage that kicks in?

I had an experience with an outboard that was almost exactly the same as I
used to have with an '81 motorcycle.

When the motor sits over winter, or unused for awhile, it seems to run ok at
the start of the season, but it is kind of like in a "reserved power" mode.
After running it for a few minutes, and then revving up the power, it seems
like a second stage is kicking in, and it takes off with full power. It's ok then
for the season.

I wonder if this is a symptom of gunk building up in the carb and then getting
cleaned out with the motor running. Anybody know? Does fuel injection cure
this, as well as fuel stabilizers?

Most modern carbs(76-newer) have 3 sets of jets, idle-mid and high speed so yes if one set gets plugged up it will affect performance.

Alot of times it is just one carb that gets plugged on one set of jets so the motor seems down on power and it can be hard to diagnose.

Injectors are better but still get plugged over time just like in your car.

The best cure for this is to drain your carbs at the end of the season, if there isn't anyhting in them it can't plug them up and run a small amount of Sea Foam in your gas through the year.

the best thing is to clean your carbs, then use seafoam in your fuel all the time. seafoam will keep a clean carb clean, but will not clean a dirty 2 stroke carb. yes your 40 only has 2 jets low and high speed. the larger motors have mids.
