I have a pair of these spark testers from Harbor Freight and they are quite handy. There is a light bulb inside the plastic housing and it flashes in response the the charge. I think they are good for determining whether you are getting some spark but probably not too good to determine the intensity of the spark. It is a snap to put them on and you can also run the motor at a pretty fair rpm to perform other tests.

I find those spark testers to be not much use in the sense that all it takes is a weak spark to light the light. I use one like this

it allows me to adjust the gap and see how hot the spark is.
