I have a 2000 Crownline 5.0 Volvo Penta SX. I just don't know what motor is in the boat. Is it a Ford or Chevy?

Do I need to replace the distributor every season?
How often should I replace the spark plugs?

Post your serial # if possible & Don S will tell ya exactly what you have.....;)
If your distributer is in the front....Ford.....
In the back GM.....
Ya probably have a GM.....
The distributer should last for years....
Tuneup wise, once a year is plenty for the plugs, cap & rotor....;)

Almost certainly a GM. Ford was only used for a few years in the 70s if I remember right.

You shouldn't need to change the distributor itself unless it breaks. You may need to change the consumable parts if it uses points instead of an electronic ignition, but I'd be surprised if that was the case.. that's a pretty new boat to have points.

I've racked up 50 hours this season. Should I replace the plugs before I take it in the ocean this weekend? I will be going about 25 miles from Long Beach, CA to Catalina Island.

I always found its best not to make changes before a long ride if not necessary.

The 5.0GL on the cover of your engine tells the story. The "G" in GL stands for General Motors. Had it been a Ford, it would have been a FL.
Now for a history lesson.
Volvo used a 5.0L Ford from 94 thru the 96 NC models.
In the 97 LK models, there were NO 5.0L engines at all.
In 98 with the BY models, they started using the 5.0L Chevy engine.
Volvo has not used a Ford since 96.
