Measure from the inside flats of the transom clamps, where the motor would sit on the transom, down to the anti-ventilation plate (large horizontal plate running around the outside of the lower unit).
15" = Short Shaft
20" = Long Shaft
25" = Xtra Long Shaft
Normally the motor should be set up so the antiventilation plate sits even with the bottom of the boat (the keel) to as much as 1-2" above the keel, depending upon application and hull. Racing motors will of course run much higher on the transom and use special props/gearcases.
