Do I have a new OMC Shift cable?

I've been told that OMC recalled the shift cable on the 4.3L cobra. How could I tell if this change has been made on my I/O? What should I look for?
thanks

they ae red instead of black, but that was way back in 1989, it could well have been replaced with an aftermarket one by now, that could be black. See how it shifts in the water before changing anything.

Re: Do I have a new OMC Shift cable?

Well I was just given the boat and the woman that gave it to me said that she remembers there being some shifting issues (although she couldn't remember exactly what it was, as it wasn't her that was using the boat, instead her ex-husband). I just need to know so that I can perform a cable adjustment if it is new. What would be red? The cable housing? I did notice that the connection to the engine is blue, not red but a least a color.

edit- I just spoke with the woman as I was writing and somebody (not a certified boat mechanic) told her that the engine would need to be pulled out to fix the shift problem. Is that possible, what would cause that to be necessary?

That recall, along with the gear recall was all over 20 years ago. So the wrong style cable is probably not your problem.

What exactly is your problem, even the new style cables go bad quite often. They also don't suddenly go out of adjustment. Something has gone wrong.

Well you would not have to pull the motor to change the shift cable, that's for sure, I think you are getting way ahead of yourself, you will only know if the cable and its adjustment are good, when you shift it on the water, where there will be resistance from the prop. Sometimes you can have a shift problem, but it will shift OK on land when you run it on the muffs+hose, because there is no resistance against the prop from the water on land. The classic Cobra problems are --jumping out of gear, feels like a big BUMP at the rear of the boat, and not going into neutral, like you're coming into the dock, put it in neutral, but it's still in foward....and you're about to hit the dock! Shifting problems in boats are potentially a safety hazard, that's why I don't advise that you adjust it yourself, unless you really know what you are doing, as a beginner, start with letting a professional mechanic go over it. Then at least you are starting off with something that is safe to use, and will do what you expect (go and stop!) Mine didn't like to go into neutral when we first got it, and it made learning to drive a boat stressful to say the least. Best thing I ever did was get it to a mechanic who knew Cobras, and he got it shifting like new, and it's been fine ever since.
