I have a 1986 Grumman aluminum boat. The boat is painted, does this mean it is gelcoat? If so why is it called gelcoat? I have noticed chalky residue comes off the paint in the water. What can I do to restore?

No gelcoat there, the first coat in the mold for a fiberglass boat is the gelcoat. That would be the outer coating that you see. <br />I wouldn't know what the chalky residue on your boat is, but maybe it's just the paint oxidizing. Chief

You need a good compound, probably a new coat of paint. Check out Interlux Trilux 33 for aluminum hulls. Just under $200 a gallon!
