Do I have to have a throttle return spring?

Hi Guys:

On the diesel engine that's going to go in my boat (eventually) it has a throttle return spring on the injection pump lever. But I'm thinking with the Morse control the cable pushes the throttle back to idle position, unlike in a car where you want the spring to return it to idle anytime you take your foot off the gas.

So do inboard boat engines generally have a throttle return spring or not?

Thanks,

Bert

need more than "the diesel"

many marine diesels use no throttle cable.

"many marine diesels use no throttle cable"...........Huh?

My engine is a Chevy 6.2 litre, 1993 vintage. It has the same Stanadyne Roosamaster rotary IP used on all the GM/Ford diesels of that era.

most I've been around in the last decade are electronic.

If you have a spring on the housing like #12 in this pic, I'd leave it. It might help load the shaft seal evenly. they aren't heavy springs on most Stanadyne pumps- doubt it would affect the push pull cable adversely... and if anything ever came disconnected, no harm in having a spring bias it towards low idle.

Re: Do I have to have a throttle return spring?

Thanks for the info and diagram Howard. In addition to the coiled spring you mentioned mine has 2 extension springs on the lever. I think I'm going to take at least one of those off. Otherwise I think it's just going to keep pulling my throttle lower and lower from vibration as I'm running along.

Thanks again.
