Do I have to pull the motor?

I am fairly new to boating. I am very mechanically inclined and can work on just about any car/truck but boats are new so I may not use all the right terms here.

Background:
The last time I was on the water we was pulling a tube and when you would turn the outdrive would knock real loud. As soon as we hear it do this we stopped. There was oil floating on the water. I checked the outdrive and found a small hole in the ujoint bellows. We was fairly close to the dock so I decided to just limp it in. When you was going straight there was no noise.

My boat is a Larson 220 cuddy cabin with 350 Volvo Penta DP-1 outdrive

I started taking the outdrive apart thinking it was probably the ujoints. Once I got it all apart I found that the ujoints was still in perfect condition. The outer most bearing on the shaft that goes from the engine to the yoke was disintegrated.

Questions:
I have done a lot of research on this and it seems that I have to pull the motor to get to this shaft because the bearings are pressed onto the shaft and I can not get the shaft out with out taking the bellhousing (not real sure on that term) off and taking the shaft out from the front.

Also does this setup not have a gimbal bearing, it seems that in my research gimbal bearing came up a lot but from what I can tell this design does not incorporate one?

Most likely the bellows failed, let water in and has destroyed the u-joints,input shaft seals on the drive and the gimble bearing.
The drive will leak gear lube back into the bellows.

You need to pull the drive off,not the engine.

He has an older Volvo Gary, no gimbal bearing.

Yes, you have to pull the engine to replace the bearings in the flywheel cover.

Here is a thread where another member had the same problem a couple of years ago. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=265021

Hey Don, do you have a schematic to the DP-A outdrive so I can order parts, I cant seem to find one and I want to try to get the parts asap so I can get back on the water. Thanks in advance.
