I have a Carter Fuel pump on a Mercruiser V6 4.3L Alpha 1 262 205HP 1989. I took the fuel pump off for inspection trying to trouble shoot my fuel system, The porus stone filter is blue in color, the clear yellow line is clogged with a reddish oil substances as is the inlet tube where it connects on the pump, it also has deposit looking things on various parts inside the pump. is there a way to know if I need a new pump? A few different opinions would be great...Thanks!

Check the post on the top of the forum. It tells you how to test you fuel system and pump. Good luck.

Re: Do I need a new fuel pump?

I was hoping for an easier way of telling if the pump is bad? Being that the sight line ( the clear yellow tube) is clogged and so is the inlet that the sight line attaches to on the pump is clogged as well, would that be an indication I need a new pump? Once my engine warms up under load, I cant get the boat to go over about 10-15 mph....

I have not done it, but I am pretty sure there are rebuild kits for the pumps (at least, their automotive cousins used to). All that's inside there is a lever, spring and rubber diaphram. My guess is you take it apart, soak it in some carb cleaner, then reassemble with new software.

Yeah I recently found out this boat I bought couldn't go faster then 15 mph when the last time it was running, 4 years ago. Now I just found out today the pump is bad. trying to order a new one here on iboat but I don't know exactly which one I need or how to find out if the one I think I need is the correct one. Good luck!! sounds like a pump to me sir.

Re: Do I need a new fuel pump?

The Carter and Rochester pumps look different. The Carter has a tall housing on the top of it where the fuel filter gets installed.

The two are interchangeable, the difference is the spot the fuel inlet and outlets are located. The rigid fuel lines are what causes the problem when you change the brand of the pump.

If you can view the pictures of the 2 pumps, you should be able to easily determine which one you would need.
