Do I need a prop puller

Hey what’s happening everybody! First time post so please forgive me if I screw anything up. Well to make a long story short my kid (God bless him) put some small rocks down the exhaust hole in the prop of my brand new ’05 Bayliner 175 (please don’t bash). It’s a Mercruser 3.0 liter alpha one. I think I got them all out except for maybe one. It looks like I can get a better view of the situation if I take the prop off.

My two questions are:
1. Do I need a prop puller tool to remove the prop?
2. The rocks are around .5 inch in size, what can I expect from engine complications if I can’t get it out or perhaps miss one that I don’t see?

I hope I can get this taken care of…I wanna fish this weekend. :(

Your boat sounds new enough that you do not need a puller. Pay attention to how you pull it off be sure and lube it back up when you put it back on so that next time the kid puts anything in there you can easily remove it. As far as damage goes you probly won't have any. I am sure someone else will give you there thoughts.
Welcome to iboats enjoy the new boat!

I don't think you'll have any problems. If I am not mistaken, there is not much in there except an exhaust tube. When you put it in water and start it up it will probably work its way out.

I have on occasion dregded up some sand whil working my boat off the beach (same power) did not think twice about it. That rock would have to go a long way upstream to make it anywhere it could cause damage.

RIGHT ON!! I was pretty worried, I didn't know if it could somehow come in contact with the prop shaft. Thanks for the quick respose guys. Bayliner bashers aside; Great forum!

Re: Do I need a prop puller

BTW, put some grease on the shaft after you pull the prop to look. You WILL need a puller if it goes without grease for long.

Also, I'm not real keen on the hose idea as that could push it up. I'm with rogerwa on this one. You really don't need to do anything. When you start it, water and exhaust flow will throw it out in a heartbeat.
