Do I need a thermostat?

I have a 1986 150 Evinrude . I am afraid of the thermostats sticking and causing overheating. There is no alarm should the motor overheat. Can I remove the thermostats? If I leave them out, will the motor run properly? I live in Alabama and do not run boat in the winter.

Depends who you ask. THere is an optimal operating range, and if the motor isnt allowed to warm up (due to the fact that water continues to flow through the motor, even when the motor is cold) then you may have a rough idle, and a long time for the motor to warm up. I am pretty sure that the '86's had an overheat horn in the control box. If i were you Id replace the thermostats, but if you run it temporarily w/o the stats until they come in, thatll be fine. You can also check the old stats with a pot of water on the stove, and thermometer. If they open at 140 degress then you are good to go.

I will do that. Thanks for the speedy reply .I will order 2 new stats today. $135 for a thermostat sensor is pricey!!!! Think I will invest in 2 new thermostats.

I ordered new pippet (sp) valves. Exactly what do they do for the motor?

I have an Evinrude 1990 150 V6 that I just bought. One of the first things that I did was replace the complete impeller. Second thing that I did was pop the thermostat covers and put in new ones. They're cheap and it allows you to get a look at the top end of your engine's cooling system.

The thermostats in my engine were terrible looking.
