Hi, I have 3.0 Volvo Penta GS GL/Sx I would like to lube the gimble and universal, the Clymer manual mentions to check the alignment with a special tool. I have read posts that state the alignment really does not change unless you have worn engine mounts. Question do I need the tool if all I want to do is lubricate.

Yes.
You should check the alignment everytime the drive is off and at least yearly. Otherwise you have no idea if anything has changed or going wrong.
The alignment bars are the same as Mercs and readily available on ebay for around $60 or as an aftermarket item.
If something goes wrong and you miss it, you could end up replacing the coupler at ~ 200 to 300 bucks. plus the fun of pulling the engine to replace said coupler.
Your choice.
