Do I need an outboard specific tachometer?

My boat currently has an old AirGuide Sea Speed tach installed, and was there when I bought the boat. It has never read correctly. Will show the motor as idling around 3,000rpm, and even the slightest bit of throttle application will cause the gauge to peg high at 7,000+ rpm. It's obvious that the motor is not actually idling at those speeds. I pulled it out of the dash, and found the jumper wire to be connected between terminals 1, 3, and 4. I tried every other combination of jumpers, and one of them would show idling around 1,000rpm, but still would shoot up to 5,000+ right off idle.

This is my first 2 stroke motor, and I've never before worked on these old tachs, I really don't know if it's a problem in the wiring, tach signal, or the tach itself, so I was just going to replace it with a new gauge. That said, do I need one of the expensive "marine outboard" tachs, or can I toss in one of the automotive style Autometers that I already have sitting on the bench here? Obviously the auto style wouldn't necessarily be sealed against moisture, though I'm really just looking for something functional at the moment so I can properly tune the motor and prop for the boat.

Outboard (2 sroke) tachometers do not read the ignition firing like a a four streoke engine. They read the pulses from the stator.

With that said, you can use an automotive inductive type shop tach for testing but you have to divide the reading in half as a two stroke fires twice as many times as a four stroke.

Marine tach is adjustable, to match the number of pulses coming from the magnets under the flywheel.

For instance, a flywheel with 6 magnets, each having a north and south "pole", so, 6 x 2 =12 poles.
Then the switch on the back of the tach is set to match.

What motor make, model, year?
Because some Force motors are 20 pole, and they require a tach that is almost impossible to source.

Also, there are small portable inductive tacos, like TinyTach, that can be used, temporary, or permanent.

Yes you do need an outboard specific tach. For outboards will go up to 7000 rpm and inboards up to 6000 rpm

1973 Johnson 85HP V4.

I do have a couple Tiny Tachs running on equipment at home, but I'd imagine they wouldn't be all that easy to read while underway at the helm running WOT...

Up until a few years ago, Marine tachometers were either for inboard engines or for outboard engines. More recently, they are becoming universal.

Did you try to source the connection info for your present tach, for your current OB? The web has some useful stuff....There also may be some guys/gals who know the answer, cause they are curious. Maybe old Airguide info exists?

I found the terminal jumper information a while back, but the one specified for 4 cylinder didn't improve it at all. So I tried all the different combinations.

The bezel on the gauge is falling apart already, and I'm not sure I'd trust the accuracy of this gauge at this point in it's life anyways.

A cheap alternative is a Hardline hour/tach model HR-8062-2. Follow installation procedures. Before ordering check with the manufacturer what's the max cable lenght that tach can support to read rpm well.

Only comes with 60 inch standard cable. Cable must be one single piece when routed from engine to meter. Can install it on the dashboard or front OB cowl. Are excellent for prop maximizations. Can change battery when low on this model which is a plus.

Check Iboats, Amazon for them.

Happy Boating
