I replaced the the yoke shaft seal in the upper gear housing on my early 80s 120 drive. ser# 5389767.
The drive is in forward and held in place w/a bungee cord around the prop. My question is do I need to load the vertical shaft? I have not moved any thing, only pulled the drive shaft bearing assembly. Can I just re-assemble the drive as is?
Thanks for lookin'!

when you replaced the seal and inspected the bearings did the bearings slide off the gear? did you find 2 rings between the bearings?
There is no preload to assemble the input shaft. IF the gears have been replaced with a newer set ,you may need to use rolling torque method when tightening the nut. If not ,just torque the nut to specs.

Sounds like he is talking about the vertical shaft.... pre-load pin? there or not? Not enough detail.... Pics help.

Yes, The bearings and spacers were kept in order. Everything looks good, gears included.
I did not remove the top cap so I don't know if it has a pre-load pin. Sounds like I can re-install the input shaft as is.
Also marked the original position of the nut for reference.
Thanks guys

Re: Do I need to pre-load driveshaht?

Are you following the steps in the service manual (the "good" service manual!)? Original position of the nut wont get you there.... things change as you take it apart and such....you either have to use the rolling torque method, or straight nut torque method, depending on your setup.
Top cap wont tell you if you have a pre-load pin (that (if you have one) is located at the top of the vertical shaft of the lower half, ), and that is not applicable to this discussion it appears since we seem to be focused on just the yoke shaft bearings. Best of luck... KB

If you have the small spacer ('d' in the drawing below), then you need to torque the nut on the end of the short yoke (the one next to the gear 'a') to 70-80 lb.ft, then install the assembly in the drive shaft housing and torque the retainer ('k') to 200 lb.ft. Using a mark of the previous location is not close enough.... If you have the special tool and a torque wrench there is a chart for calculating the torque to apply, based on the length of your torque wrench. (I have included that table below also)....
