I took my boat in because the tilt stopped working and they determined that the motor and the hydraulic assembly both need to be replaced. They quoted me 1400 for the part and 5 hours for the labor, so I brought it home because it's just too much for my budget.
So I found a refurbished assembly that matches my engine (1999, 70 HP Johnson), and I'm trying to make sure I can do this before I place the order.
Looking up at the assembly, I don't see why I'd need to remove the engine from the boat. Logically, it makes sense that if I could get it up and away so I can get at it from all sides, the job will prolly be easier, but I'm not sure I have access to a lift (friend who prolly has one is out of town).
The engine is currently in the up position, resting on the trailer lever. I'm wondering if careful jacking could take the weight off sufficiently that I'd be able to do the job. I like the idea of being able to get at the bolts and pins and such from all sides, but I'm wary of getting 350 pounds up in the air.
Also, I haven't figured out how to get the steering cable off
I loosened both sides and tried to slide the cable out (towards the steering wheel), but it feels like I'm hitting a hard stop. I thought about it a little and now I'm wondering if the cable is removed by sliding it AWAY from the steering wheel. Makes sense in a way.
So I guess that's two questions. 1, do I need to remove the engine from the boat. And 2, if I do need to remove it, how do I disconnect the steering cable.
Thanks in advance.
