Do I need to still use the Jack Plate?

I am planning on getting a 25HP or 30HP Etec, long shaft. It will be replacing my Yamaha 15 HP. I had the Yammy on a jack plate to get the best performance. With the new outboard is it recommended the jack plate stays in for best performance? Advise.

It looks like your Yamaha is a couple of inches high, but, if it works there, it's good. Your new long shaft will be too low in the water and create drag. Try to set your new motor with the cavitation plate about even with the keel. You'll need to raise the kack plate some.

Try it with the jack plate your etecs cav plate should be even with the bottom of the boat or no more than a inch above.

Andy...what brand/model jack plate are you using?..I'd like to recommend it to a friend as it looks substantial.

It's called a Mini Jack Plate, you can get them at Cabelas, Bass Pro Shops. Around 70 bucks.

I could be wrong but it looks to me like your Yamaha is a long shaft (20") motor mounted on a 15" transom. That would explain why you have the jack plate in the first place. When you say long shaft Etec, if you mean 20" shaft, you will need the jack plate again.

Again I could be wrong as it is hard to tell from your pictures, but in the bottom pic your motor looks to me as if it may even be mounted a little low. In the bottom pic it looks like you have some sort of fin mounted on the anti-cavitation plate. It looks to me like it is well below the keel. I don't see the fins in the top pic.

As others have said, when you mount the new motor start with the anti-cavitation plate about even with the keel. The higher you raise it the better your performance will be as long as it stays low enough for proper cooling system operation and no slippage of the prop in turns.

I measured the transom and it measured 20"
