. . . here's the deal, 1977 SS 18, 150HP Merc 1500 Series OB, restoration started and aborted.
Motor condition unknown (dealer figures it to be 90's era 4-cyl, 4-stroke, fuel injected).
Hull has been stripped (which is what I would have done first anyway) and appears sound and all important pieces are present.
Single-axle, original, Dilly brand trailer
Asking price is $700

Let the opinions begin . . . and thanks in advance (first post, not new to tinnies)
Found the original 1977 info sheets on this site!
Not really interested in the motor, if it runs what's she worth to a willing buyer? What if it doesn't?

Doesn't seem to be a bad deal if it's what your looking for. Definitely a project, but worst case everything could probably be parted out to get the $700 back. And that motor is from early 70's at the latest. Good luck!

+2 on worth the $. but i think that motor is late 70s-early 80s, not that it makes a difference. 10 hp over rated hp for 18' hull too, also not that it makes a difference.

if the guy who told you motor was a 90s era 4 stroke is the seller, take everything else he tells you with a shaker of salt. but not much you can't easily verify on that one cept the motor internals. take your compression gauge and a battery

No way is that Merc either a 89's, injected or 4 stoke model. In fact it looks like the big brother to my '66 with the wrap around cover and other similarities. I bet it's a '77 matching the boat. Is this from a boat dealer? Price is fair, if $700 is the asking price, maybe $500, $550 or $600. Test the waters, start under $500 and see what happens. It appears to be a good project.

look at some of the resto threads on here for an idea of how much it's worth NOT to have to scrape out the PO's or factory's mistakes from below decks (spray in foam, bedliner, hacked rib repairs, etc) and to prep the outer hull for base white coat. i'd drop 700 in a heartbeat if motor is usable.

"Do I need yet another project?" Well, if you have to ask, you're clearly not busy or broke enough with the ones you have now, so the answer is an unmitigated, YES!!!! Plus, $700 ain't too bad you might even get it for less with some sweet talk. Tell him she'll go to a good home with lots of other Starcrafts to play with : )
