Should I put one on, does it really help with performance, I have never had one and the skeg has always been just fine, What is the main purpose??

The trim tab is also a sacrificial anode on most motors.
And serves (if adjusted properly) to counteract the torque steer that most boats have.

If your boat turns when you let go of the steering wheel, the tab will help.

Most boats with power steering don't have a trim tab above the prop. My mechanic said it didn't need one.

I can stear just fine and let go of the stearing wheel and no problem there, I really didn't think it would help in any way unless it helps in other ways I don't know about.
