I opened the drain petcock under the exhast manifold yesterday and about 2 cups of water came out. My question is, was this the normal amount of water that comes out or should I remove the petcock and rod the drain hole out with a screwdriver? If the answer is remove the petcock, exactly how do I do this?

I wouldn't trust one, they plug up too easy and there is no way to clean them out. Remove them completely and use a piece of wire to make sure the hole is clear and free to drain. Then put a regular hex head brass pipe plug in there for next time.
Also, when posting a question it's best to state what engine and drive you have. No way of knowing if 2 cups of water is enough because no one knows what engine its on.

We only install petcocks that do unscrew from the bases so they are easily rodded out, you could pick one up all any parts store while you have the one out. Never trust any drain that seems to be pluged, just as Don says always double ck, I can save you money in the spring

harrisg I have the same petcock as you.If you just keep unscrewing it it will come comepletly out.Do as DonS says and then just screw it back in.Your AQ125A also has a drain plug under the exchanger as well. The only problem I have with this motor is the lowest piont is the impeller pump housing.I crack that open and let it drain as well.

Thanks for the info. Another question then is, if draining water from the impeller housing, does it cause any problem with the impeller when starting up because the housing is dry for a short time until water flows again?

Volvo Penta AQ125A/270

that is my question on the dry impeller too, how to get water flowing into there when I start up in the spring?

How do you get the petcock to come out completely? It seems to be in there permanently on mine.

Joe over the years alot of the orginal petcocks have been replaced with automotive petcocks that the center t part won't come out so they can be rodded out

Laddies-
so how do I get it out so it can be replaced?
or is this one not replaceable and you rod it out as best you can?

When you hook the garden hose up your water pressure should be enough to force enough water up to lube the impeller.

That type of petcock should have a hex base you can put an open end wrench on to remove completly. If it doesn't have a hex base you should be able to turn it clear out.

I agree with Jack.Typically your first start-up of the season will be in the driveway with the muffs on.If you want to,you can take a look at the impeller when your draining up for the winter.Eventually you will need to replace one.

Re: Do I remove petcock from manifold drain?

I just did this and I got about a pint of water (2 c ups) out.......

Initially I got nothing out, then I took a key and jammed it up in there, twisted around and a bunch of black carbon came out, then the water, and it drained nicely.

There's an exhaust plug under the heat exhchanger too?

I think I"ll change my impeller in the spring :D
