Do I throw out the Carbs or not 55 Evinrude

I have been told that since I own a "77" model 55 Evinrude that the Carbs cannot be adjusted and that it is just high maintanence. Can I buy a good replacement Carb, or would it be better just to buy a newer used motor. The compression is good, and it has a new power pack, new fuel pump, new gas lines, tanks, and the carbs were rebulit two years ago and I have not run 12 gallons of fuel through them since the rebuild. (the diaphram on the fuel pump, so chances are there is something in the carbs causing all my problems)<br /><br />What should I expect to pay ?<br /><br />thanks

Keep that engine ,carb included. There is nothing on that carb that can't be rebuilt, and it IS adjustable. Someone must want your motor, or want to sell you a new one by feeding you some fish-story.<br /><br />No, I don't have a manual, and it has been 12 years or better since I werked on a carb off that year/model Johnnyrude. But the basics are basic.<br />It must have all the adjustments needed to maintain operation. I have never seen one without a mixture screw , or tube adjustment .<br />However, I NEVER adjust a carb on an engine that isn't running right....Unless I am told that someone tried to adjust them, then all bets are off, until I get what was originally wrong with the carb repaired.<br />The carbs on 2cycle engines are very simple, but are the leading area of failure on an engine that has sat for a while,or has old gas in it.<br />You may even have to remove the gas tanks and clean them, along with the carb.<br />Best advice I can give is, get the shop manual,a carb rebuild kit, a can of spray carb cleaner,and an average copmpliment of tools, and dig-in..If you run-into a road block halfway thru the rebuild, you know where to come and get help,albeit,on a bit of a "delay-system".<br />Let us know how you are getting along with it.

Aloha.<br /><br />I agree with 12Footer. Your engine was many years ahead of the industry when it was built and it is still a very modern engine.<br /><br />The carbs are not difficult to work on. Do not switch their positions or the linkage will not hook up correctly.<br /><br />12Footer is right. Someone wants your engine and wants to sell you one you don't need.<br /><br />Good luck.
