Hi,

I've got a 1987 Evinrude outboard 8hp motor. I cleaned out all of the water paassages manually and still had to take it to a mechanic to get under the powerhead. All he did was push a wire ina and out and I don't think it is as good as it should be.

I've seen liquid cleaners sold at Florida Sportsmans seminars and was wondering if they work?

This motor has been used in salt water for 15 years, and even though we flushed it out it still got plugged up with sand and salt.

I've tried limeaway and things like that which didn't work well.

Thanks.

Yes, there are some cleaners that work. I've heard one called Saltaway is good. This is what I do. In a barrel with enough mixtuer to just cover the impellor I put one gallon of CRL and run the motor til its warm. Shot it off, let it cool and repeat. Sometimes on a real dirty motor I do this routine for 3 days. Has always worked for me.

Walker,

Thanks for your interest. What is CRL? I did a search on the net and came up with Salt-X too.

A neighbor mentioned saltaway yesterday. I am good about flushing but one article said you have to do it before the motor dries or the salt is harder to get out. That doesn't leave much time.

A mechanic costs more too.

I'll bet he means CLR for Clacium Lime and Rust. Available at grocery stores. Haven't seen gallons. Sam's Club?
